Develop a more clinically meaningful understanding of plantar pressure and explore how emerging technology could extend diabetic foot monitoring beyond the clinic.

Plantar pressure plays an important role in diabetic foot assessment, offloading and ulcer prevention. However, pressure data can only support clinical decision-making when clinicians understand how it has been measured, what the reported variables represent and how the findings relate to the wider clinical picture.

The Diabetic Foot Pressure Series brings together two free live webinars exploring plantar pressure from complementary perspectives: the first examining the principles of pressure measurement and clinical interpretation, and the second considering how smart insoles and remote monitoring could support the future development of diabetic foot care.

Together, the sessions move from measuring pressure at a particular point in time to understanding how pressure, temperature and activity might be monitored during everyday life. You can register for either webinar individually or attend both to follow the complete progression.

Session 1: Plantar pressure and ulcer prevention in the diabetic foot

A plantar pressure measurement can appear highly precise, but its clinical value depends on how the data were captured, which variables are being interpreted and the structural and tissue context in which loading occurs.

In this clinically focused webinar, Hardeep Mehmi will examine the mechanical stresses contributing to diabetic foot ulcer risk, including the relationships between force, pressure, stress, strain, load magnitude, load duration and repetitive mechanical stress.

The session will compare shod and unshod assessment, in-shoe and platform systems, and static and dynamic testing. It will also explore how factors including sensor dimensions and distribution, sampling frequency, pressure range and calibration can influence the data produced.

Using clinical examples including claw toes, Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy and equinus, Hardeep will demonstrate how peak plantar pressure, centre of pressure and pressure–time integral can be interpreted alongside structural presentation, shear, tissue integrity and the implications of offloading for the contralateral limb. Current evidence and commonly cited pressure-relieving targets will also be critically considered.

Session 2: Understanding smart insoles for diabetes

Clinic-based plantar pressure assessment captures an important moment in time. Smart insole technology offers the possibility of understanding loading within a patient’s own footwear, during everyday activity and between clinical appointments.

Building on the principles explored in session one, Lise Pape, founder and Managing Director of Walk With Path, will examine how pressure-sensing insoles collect and communicate data during functional activity.

Using the Path Feel system as a practical example, the webinar will explore the measurement of plantar pressure, temperature and activity; how information can be communicated through a patient-facing app and clinician dashboard; and how graded alerts could help identify patients who may require earlier review.

The session will consider accuracy, reliability, validation and the current evidence surrounding smart insole technology. It will also explore how remote monitoring might support patient self-management, adherence and clinical prioritisation, alongside the practical challenges of incorporating wearable data into NHS and private diabetic foot services.

The series combines established mechanical principles with critical discussion of developing technology, helping clinicians distinguish between what pressure systems can measure, what the resulting data might mean and how that information could contribute to a broader approach to diabetic foot ulcer prevention.

These free webinars form the first two sessions in the wider Diabetic Foot Pressure Series. A third, advanced paid webinar will complete the series, bringing the principles of pressure measurement, interpretation and monitoring into more complex clinical application.

The webinars can be attended independently, although joining both free sessions is recommended for clinicians who want to follow the progression from clinical pressure assessment to continuous monitoring and emerging technology.
